"Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth announced her pregnancy on Tuesday, which will make her the first member of Senate to give birth while in office."

"Duckworth was elected to the Senate in November of 2016. Only 10 women in U.S. history have given birth while serving in Congress, Duckworth’s office noted, highlighting the way in which it has impacted her policy agenda."

I'm kinda shocked that only 10 women have given birth while serving in Congress, and Sen. Duckworth will be the first in the Senate.

About 50% of voters are female. One would think that those in congress are there because they were selected and voted in by their clientele, once again of whom about 50% are female. Would think that the balance in congress is a reflection of the active political voters in their area.
Not common to see a 50 year old or more (male or female) having kids but not sure its news worthy to the nation at all.

While I'm never one to poo-poo the miracle of childbirth, I think that as we strive for equality between the sexes, highlighting differences seems like the wrong direction.
I think Ben Carson is the only politician to perform open heart surgery. Shall we throw a party?
While some in Washington may be interested in where and with whom a pregnancy (I'm not focusing on Duckworth) was conceived, I have no interest in her family life.
Perhaps the surprisingly low number of pregnant politicians is due to the overall advanced ages of our elected officials.

Senator Duckworth is 49, and women are having children in their 40s every day.

Yeah and there are only 2 spots open in each state for senator.
Calculate the odds for both winning a senate seat AND being pregnant and get back to me on how common an occurrence that would be.

Ya 49. Wonder if she will carry to term a downs baby. And if t matters to anyone. I dont really care. Just saw some talking heads bring it up. She is a war hero because she lost both legs in a helicopter crash. I guess she has money to hire nanny and household help so she can be in politics.

Senator or not, I find that to be selfish behavior on part of the woman. The chances of problems are much higher and chances are decent you may not live to see that child graduate from high school.

Women are seriously messed up sometimes. Why would anyone want to give birth while in office or in the Senate? That's disgusting.

Go to the damn hospital like everyone else!
