... how many bales will generally fit in a pickup truck? It's been years since I have hauled it that way.

8 foot box? Tailgate down? Mind if they rest on the sides of the box? Stick out a little/alot? Hard solid bales? Tied together with baler twine? Strapped down?
Laid on edge, you can get 4 across the front, ahead of the wheel wells. Then on them, I'd put one sticking out each side and one down the middle. 3 between the wheel wells, on edge and then 4 behind them, on edge. So, you have 7 on the bottom. Next row would be 14 more. Then row three would be 4, 4 and 4. lengthways. Row four would be 5 rows of 2 bales crossways. Then the top would be 4 bales anyway you want them.
I guess I count 47.

BTW, Hay at the Monday Clare, MI auction is going for $5.40 and 6.70 a bale in small lots.

Haypoint <> Didn't you miss 4 bales on the bottom layer that were on edge?? 4 in front, 3 between wheel wells.. 4 on the back with the tailgate down.. That makes 11 on the floor.. Lay 12 on top of them with the ends on the sides of the bed..
Put another layer of 12 on top of those.. Put 6 crossways down the center of the 4th row, with 3 longways on each side of the row down the middle. That makes 47 bales only 4 bales high.. If you got to have 50 throw 3 up on top. Hold it under 80 MPH on the curves and you will be home before your pop can is empty!

Oh, gosh, Some of these posts just tickle me pink :pound:

I've seen plenty of 75 bales going down the road, but that's a bit top heavy for safety IMHO. I get 50 in the bed on a regular basis and use tiedowns. If I don't have kids, dogs, or groceries I can fit another three in the crew cab. I don't care to have things hanging out in the breeze. High and tight and tied down is my motto. Then it's rutted
dirt road all the way to the barn.

Yup, I missed those back four. Thanks. I can't ever keep count while loading and have to count them after they are all on. Looks like I can't even count them in my mind either.:stars:

If you were asking me, the answer is....

For many years yes I did load all by myself. Now that I'm considered by my family to be "elderly" they prefer that I help by counting and admiring their muscles :hysterical: But there are times when no one is available when I deem haygettin' to be a priority, so I fire up the diesel and do what I can by myself. Even with rheumatoid arthritis, knee replacements, and a few other irritations I can still usually manage to pile on and tie down 30 or so. Just takes me longer than it used to :yuck:

That last row is out of reach due to my knees and fear of falling while out of cell phone reception :help:

Are you loading them? I can only get 22 in our truck...after that, I'm pooped. We have an off road- taller-than-it-needs-to-be pick up though.
