Wrangler help

I have a '92 Wrangler (manual trans). We reworked the clutch a couple years ago and I am having trouble with the retainer ring (shifter into transmission). I can seem to get it fully engaged.

Chilton's says to reach around the transmission, depress and turn clockwise - ok. I can't seem to get a grip to turn it once it is depressed. I believe I have it aligned correctly when depressing (1/8" of the ring is above the trans. when depressed). It will not depress when aligned somewhere other than this spot.

Is there a trick?

if you have to, use a screw driver to reach down from in the cab. and make sure it is in neutral.. Then it should go in a bit easier.. you will be fighting a spring to get the retainer down in there.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. It was in reverse when it popped. I believe I have the fork back in the correct position so I should be able to move to neutral.
