get yourself a paint ball gun, trust me the cats and dogs will steer clear after a few hits from it.

I sympathize--we presently have someone's cat turning over our garbage can every night that rolls, and shreds it all over that part of the yard. I have had to resort to barricading the trash cans so they don't get turned over. DH is going to set a live trap this weekend.

Nearest neighbor has this dog, runs the roads, and for some reason it likes to come just inside our gate and do his business. I don't like it because I don't know what diseases that dog might have, and although our dogs have their shots, I'm still leery of my dogs catching some disease from their dog's poop. Occasionally we don't close our gate when we come thru it, and that dog takes every advantage it can.

 

Can you sell them both and move somewhere out in the boonies where you can have your ducks?

 

They're probably feeding it Ol' Roy dog food. That stuff is horrible.

I know what you mean! A couple of weeks ago, a big red pitbull was dumped on my road. Nobody can catch him. He gets in my dogfood barrel every night, but as soon as a light goes on or a door opens, he's gone. I'm really afraid for my goats, who should start kidding within the next month or so. I do have an LGD, so hopefully he'll be able to take on this dog. I would SSS, but he disappears so quickly. I've set a trap for him and so far have caught a opossum.

 

Joshie, in a few more years we hope to be set enough financially to buy another place. There are renovations that must be done to all these houses before we could even try to sell. We're working on them but it takes time.

No paintball gun here. I do have a bb rifle, .22 rifle and pistol, and a shotgun. Also have a livetrap, just haven't set it yet. Found the cat only yesterday.

Too bad I can't have thistles right next to the house, or roses. No cat is going to lay on roses or thistles.

 

They really aren't stupid pet owners, just very, very, very irresponsible ones as many, many, many, of them are. The block I live on is now up to a 12 count of dogs. Of the owners of them---only two are responsible, the other three are not. Sure wish someone could explain to me why anyone needs four dogs which the city now allows.

BTW, the number of dogs that get walked of the 12----0.

 

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I live in a very rural area and we have no dog ordinance or leash laws. A few months after we moved here a new family moved here and they're the WORST pet owners. At any given point they have 5+ dogs, no fence and they refuse to contain them. They breed "chi-weenies" & "malti-poos"... Occasionally they get a random big dog, like a lab, pit, rottie ect. ect..Most have either been run over by cars or shot by neighbors whose livestock was being harassed..

They once had a pit mix who was aggressive. It corned me on my porch one morning and continually tipped my dumpster. Caught one of my barn cats & literally ripped it to pieces.. I tried talking to them, they laughed it off. My husband even offered to help her build a fence or tie out line to help contain them and even build a nice dog house for her out of some scrap materials we had..None of this helped, she claimed she moved to the country so she didn't have to live by other's rules...The next time the dog came over, it growled at my kids who were playing in the yard, actually was biting my fence and carrying on like crazy (scared the kids half to death) my husband shot it and then asked if they would like him to bury it on our property or their's. Harsh, but at this point we had had enough of being harassed by other's animals on our property... The lil' dogs they have aren't aggressive, just nasty & highly annoying (thin, wormy and they mess all over my property and drag trash into my driveway) I started trapping them & dropping them off in a pet carrier with a note on their porch. When that didn't do anything, I started trapping them & taking them to the shelter. At least at the shelter they don't roam the roads & they have regular meals. She keeps replacing the dogs, and I keep trapping them & hauling them off. Currently I have her down to 2 dogs, which is a record. And now when she sees me outside she calls all the dogs to the house...Not the best solution, but I couldn't stomach having every dog shot that decided to come destroy my property. After all, it's not the dog's fault the owners have no sense of decency.

Since I'm sure shooting dogs isn't an option for you, perhaps you could set traps and haul them off? Or my decent neighbor came up with a handy solution...she bought some sort of powdered dog/cat deterant. Her cats wouldn't stop using her flower beds as a litter box & she tried this. I'll have to ask her the name of it..but she bought it online and sprinkled it all around the areas she wanted the cats to steer clear of & she said it works well...her flower beds looked great this year so I'd have to agree with her.

Not a pleasant situation and I'm sorry you have to deal with it. I'm sorry about the shoe too....have been there and its one sure way to get me ticked off!

If I could get the dog I would call animal control to come pick it up. They're pretty good about picking up stray dogs, if you have them contained and are patient enough to wait half a day.

Got no problem shooting the cat. BTDT

 

Too bad animal control can't pick up the owners!! Wish someone would haul off my irresponsible animal owning neighbors!!

 

It's not the dogs fault, it's the owners. He is just doing what comes naturally.

I wish people would be more responsible with their dogs and not let them roam. Had many a chicken killed because of this before we got an LGD.

Hope you can finish the repairs and move somewhere where you aren't told you cannot plant roses! Somewhere where you can relax on a porch and not even see a neighbor.

 

Throwing water on the cat might permanently discourage it from laying on your flower bed.

 

Also, people who don't control their animals do make the neighborhood more dangerous. I once lived on an isolated street where there was a good chance of being accosted by a barking stray dog if you tried to walk anywhere. And it wasn't just one stray dog. There seemed to be a never-ending supply of them.

 

We live on a farm to market road, and are still in the city limits. Dogs are supposed to be secured....Sure....had a husky looking dog kill one of my roosters and take off with it this week, I could not get to the dog quick enough and my truck is in the shop...really makes me angry..My dogs are all contained behind fenced areas, but some people will just not obey the rules. The last dog I found was a beautiful boxe.r I did not kill him, but chained him until I could find the owner...he belonged to the dog catcher !!! I reminded him it was a $200 fine if they pick up your dog.....

 

i HATE irresponsible pet owners of any kind...

my family if we combine mine and my parents dogs...we have 6...they are always in our house or secured in our yard...
as the the question as to why anyone woudl need/want 4+ dogs...well youd have to be a dog lover to understand...lol 4 is my parents max but i plan on more once i have my farm as i want another crestie and at least 2 lgd's lol.

cats are tough, if its not a house cat it will wander, not much you can do other than spay/neuter. that being said i make sure frequently with our neighbors that my cats not doing any damage or causing issues...so far it seems she stays in our yard and on the empty hill next to our property.
some good cat repelants are planting marigolds they realy dont like them
and sprinkiling used coffee grounds through your boarders...
a good squirt from the hose is usually a good repelant.
you can also use coyote urine (from hunt shops) around your boarders...

the dog is a different matter...
firslty EVERYTIME you see that dog off leash call animal control. pester them enough they might come do something about it...
traps are unlikely to work, but you might try luring it if its friendly enough, youd be amazed what chicken can do, leahs it up and off to AC.
a hose pipe is a good dog deterant usually...
as is hot pepper.

to me a bb gun is cruel...its not the dogs fault and those bbs DO break and lodge under the skin!
a paintball gun is definatly a little less inhumane...but my personal opinion is if your shooting something you better be aiming to kill it...and i wouldnt kill a stray dog unless it was a danger to me, my family, my own pets or my livestock. at which point the owner would be reciving a dead dog...

just an annoyance though...i couldnt kill a dog for simply being a pain in the tush (my littlest one would have been dead months ago if i could lol) call animal control and try to deter it...and if your up for a little warfare the owner of the dog would be finding some nice little gifts on his front lawn...
ive actually picked up after a neighbors dog who was a repeat offender (she would even carry bags and PRETEND to pick up after her dog...) after many complaints me and a few other neighbors would actually pick up the poop which was always in gardens, and wed deposit them on her lawn as we walked past...wed also wait for her to pass by and then as her dog bent to poop wed stare at her making sure shed pick it up...

she got the message pretty dang quickly.

 

I hear you all on the irresponsible dog and pet owners.

There was a dog that pooped in a yard repeatedly, and the home owner took a shovel, collected all of the dog poop, and then dumped it on the dog owner's front porch, in a neat pile.

Some say that the guy who had to collect it just about gagged to death while doing it, but it certainly fixed the problem.
