We got three Jersey steers last year, our first cows, and I am wondering about what size they should be by 6 months and 1 year old? They are smaller than the Angus steers next door, but bigger than the sheep.
Thanks!

Daily gain should be around 1.5 to 2 lb per day. Without knowing how old and/or what weight they are at now, I couldn't tell you how big they're going to be in 6 months and 1 year old. I'm assuming you want to know the weight six months from now, correct?
Well, from my limited knowledge about Jersey steers, my gut tells me that a 6 month old jersy should probably weigh around 400 lbs, and a year old about 650-700...I could be overestimating a bit though.
The half JerseyX3/8GuernseyX1/8RedAngus that I "harvested" at 10.5 months was 750# if that's any help...he gained nearly 3# per day, I guess because he was still with his mamma.
The 7/8's Guernsey I have now, at over 9 mo. old is already over 800#, and still tapping mamma. He'll be separated as soon as the weather lets up and we stop having winter!!!!!
I had a jersey steer last year form day old. He wasn't very big after 6 months, my holstiens were about twice his size. I don't know how much he weighed, he went to a pet home, but he was only about 4 1/2 feet high. (back)
Julie, its no surprise that the calf has gained like that, since he had beef genetics in him to help him gain and get at the weight that he did. Which does help me confirm that my estimates are about correct.
