Sorry for posting it hear... but you guys have a lil of everything on your farms so I was hoping someone may have a blood hound. My hubby wants one, and we know nobody with one to get info on them. Lots of info on line, but want real info from people that may have had one.
For starters let me say that i am an experienced Dog trainer. Not just an owner. And I do expect alot out of my dogs. And I am just not sure how well I'll cope with a dog thats not that obedient. And all the info on them sheds the light on the stubborn obstinate side. I am hoping thats not true, but don't want to be blind either. They also say that they are roamers when on a scent. Will they not come when called? So if you have any experience with them Id love to hear it. good or bad. Would you get one again and why?

Oddly, as many breeds as I've dealt with, I've never even seen a Bloodhound. If you don't get much info here, email some breeders that are established.

I have never owned a bloodhound but have known folks who have and have been around them in the confirmation ring. While I love the look, unless I was going to buy one for real work (tracking) I wouldn't own one. They are hard to find, very expensive, they have a very strong musky odor, are very hard to train and wander no matter what. You cannot let a bloodhound sleep on your front porch and expect that he'll be there in the morning. Recall can be taught but it is difficult and a strong scent will always win over.

Sorry - not the most encouraging response but I would rather be realistic. Someone that has actually owned a BH may dispute what I said. This is just my experience.

Did you post in the Pet Forum too?

Until recently we had a red male bloodhound as a family pet. We do live in the country and he was allowed to run loose. He was obedient, and very good with kids. The only thing is a scent trail that interest them becomes more important than anything. "Festus" would come when called though, and they are very good about always ending up back home after the chase.
