Left handers or America unite.... I have heard so much in school (mostly in German class) about how left handers are more artistic than others. I happen to be left handed and I do love art. I just dont know if this is connected to me being left handed or if the concept of left handed people being more artistic, open, and "hands on" is true.

It does seem that most famous artist you see on t.v are in fact left handed. I take pride in the fact that I am left handed  but on a different note it seems to me that the world is more "friendly" to right handers.

I hate writing in notebooks and binders because the spine is most unpleasant feeling and always in the way. I basically grew up using right handed scisors because lets face it...you cannot use scisors with your left hand easily. School suplise are a nightmare to use when you are left handed.

Yes, after so many years you get used to all of these problems but there is one thing that haunts me and will never be prevented. When I (and most left handers) write I get a nice mark on my pinky knuckle of lead or ink and of course If I am not carful everything I write gets smeared.

Fortunatly some very smart (probably left handed) person made a line of lefthanded notebooks, binders and other important things. My question is why should we have to get on a special website or go to a special store to get these much needed objects? why cant we go to Wal-mart, Krogers, or biggs like other people? :flame:

Why is America ignoring its large population of left handers.....we have been here a while and we dont plane on going any time soon.

Please voice your much appreciated oppinion on this matter and excuse my bad spelling. Thank you.

I always wondered that myself, Rusty.

You would think there would be a BIG market for left handed supplies.

My daughter is left handed and she's a wonderful aritist, too. Maybe what they say is true. :goodjob:

Do like me and become ambidextorus(sp). If I can do it with my right, I can do it with my left. I was originally right handed, But my father and stepfather are both left handed. I learned how to do everything left handed from them. Im trying to get my 2 year old to use her left hand but it hasn't worked yet.

Me too!!

Grandma was left handed so I learned to do lots of things left handed...even tie my shoes left handed...and you can tell by the way the bow sits.

Left handed items are generally WAY over priced, but I do have some left handed scissors and even a really old potatoe peeler, with a wooden handle, no swivel head....it was her's and I still use it.

I eat left handed, as well. Comes in handy because my husband is a perpertual right hander and can't do anything that requires a left hand.

Awhile back I posted about being left handed and all the things that are hard for us to use. And there is a LOT of things. Have you noticed even doors are for righties.
I guess I am artsy I am a face painter and have a blast. I also like to paint but only for my own enjoyment I don't think Iam that good..Who knows maybe one day I will become famous!!! LOL

Think this way, The inventor of the Helicoptr, The tank . And the Submarine ,As well as famous paintings and more was Left handed. His Name Leonardo DiVinchi. And History is full of others. So to say the most important discoveries for the most part were brought out by Lefthanded people. And yes I am lefthanded , as well as a few other family members to boot.

That is "left handers of the world untie" - a t-shirt that my left-handed husband once had. My best buddy growing up was left handed, we used to argue then realize we were both saying the same thing but from a different angle. My husband bemoans the fact almost all tools are built for right-handed people and it can be dangerous. I once read that left handers are more likely to die in car crashes because some of their automatic responses veer them into oncoming traffic. All I know is if we go to turn around in a parking lot, I will turn right for a u-turn, my husband turns left for a u-turn. But then again, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler and he can eye something and be within 1 inch of the length. Spelling however, is another story.

I read a report that some paleonologists have found that lefties once were the majority in the human population when we were still hunter-gatherer groups. The change in handedness came about once we became farmers.

I forget exactly why it makes a difference according to the paleontologists, but I think part of it is the creativity needed to create the stone tools and hunt animals as opposed to what is needed to farm.

Just a random thought that I wanted to share.

I will point out that one of the most annoying aspects of being a lefty is firearms. There are so few ambidextrious firearms and even fewer left-handed ones. It does make a difference when you have a hot brass casing come flying out the ejection port of a semi-auto and cross in front of your face. It also matters that most firearms are designed to protect the right side of your body if there is a structural failure of a cartridge.

One bit of trivia is that it is thought that Samuel Colt, the inventor of the Colt revolver, was a lefty. If you look at his single action revolver design, it is set up to be controlled by the left hand (strong side) and load/unload it with the right hand (weak side). There is no logic to having the loading gate on the right side of the gun if you are a righty because you have to switch hands to load and unload it, then switch back to use it.

A modern double action revolver design has the cylinder swing out the left hand side of the frame, which is set up to be controlled by the right hand and loaded with the left hand.

A fellow Lefty here...

I used to get Lefthander Magazine. They had some great articles in there about the science of hand dominance. There are some pretty good theories about why righties are the majority. The two best at the time were very interesting.
1) Lefties are slightly more sensitive to poisons...not a good trait to have when you are foraging for food.

2) When making flint tools the best angle of impact is from the right... not the left. I can't remember all the details about this one....but I remember being very impressed by the body of evidence

As for lefty notebooks...Just don't get a teacher like my 11th grade english teacher. I had one that tore from the opposite side and even though the margin was CLEARLY on the correct side she refused to grade several papers of mine because "I had written on the wrong side of the paper". Best bet is to get one that tears from the top. Hard to find but well worth it.

I always end up ordering my new guns lefthanded. You will be surprised how many you can order this way. As far as pistols, Mine are all right handed. You are right in saying they are a pain. As for shot guns, up until recently you could get an Ithica with bottom eject and switch the safety to left. Ithica just went out of buisness but you can still find them reasonably priced.
I forgot to mention eriler that my Father is an artist, he designs M&M wrappers. My stepfather owns a machine shop and designs the tools and dies they build.
I couldnt draw to save my life.

I have to admit that a few times when I was at school I would just get so incredibly mad at my notebook that I would turn it around and write on the back of the paper. I hoped my teacher would just not notice the margin was on the wrong side. I think for the most part highschool teachers are understanding about lefties to an extent.

Once my teacher did this thing with the class where aparently left handers are right brainers and people who use their right brane like art and use unique ways of figuring something out. In order for right handers to believe something they need more mathmatic or "solid" proof. That is why more left handers like art and are scientist and more right handers are mathmatitions. :nerd:

I grew up in a family of all right handers so is it normal that I play baseball and throw shotput with my right hand or am I ambidextreous(sp  ) to a certain extent??? If that is the case though arnt we all??

I'm the mother of a lefty. This year we found notebooks made by MEAD that have a glued binding instead of a spiral. That way at least your hand doesn't rest on the hard metal. As far as the artistic thing goes, my left handed father is very artistic...draws, can play almost any instrument he picks up, etc.. My son hasn't expressed those interests yet, but they BOTH have the most amazing analytical skills. They can take a problem and visualize the steps to a solution just as you would visualize the blocks needed to build a block tower. You lefties are a wonder!
