Ideas for Police Acad graduation (son)

My son is due to graduate the Police Academy in August.
He's been in since the end of Nov and doing great.
I've been tossing some ideas in my head about a graduation gift.
It's far enough off so I can plan and toward the end of my business
one of two peak seasons so I can spend a bit and would like to.
There's a cross country bike he's been wanting. ($650.)
I can always get a gift cert at the police supply store in his town.
My husband and I even talked about a cruise for him and his wife.
Maybe the bahama's since he's on the East Coast and we could get then a week-end cruise for a good price. (Maybe $1,200 for both of them)
Maybe one of those casino ships that go
out into international waters and they can legally gamble a night or two.
He's doing so great in the academy (which is very much like a boot camp)
It's 23 or 26 weeks classes, firing range, law classes, self defence and much more then 10 weeks in the field and another week or two back at class, then graduation. And after taking a $12,000 a yr pay cut to do something
so noble I'd really like to do something extra special for him.Actually for both him and his wife. She has made concessions since her husband switched careers. Any ideas? DH reminded me last night we needed to start holding back each month for this if we're to do something costly.

Do most departments in your area issue sidearms? If not (and he doesn't have one already), that would make a good gift. Folks are particular about this so be sure to find out what he wants.

Not all deparments issue a sidearm or a vest - found out if he is required to supply his own, if he is, then getting one of those would be a great gift. Wish my folks would have done that for me when I graduated. But they were not at all happy with my career choice. A gift certifcate for the uniform supply store would be nice, or if he is responsible for the dry cleaning of his uniform then a gift certificate to a local dry cleaner would be nice too.

Caelma tell your son CONGRATS!! Alot of good ideas for gifts for him!
Our local Sheriff's dept. recently lost 35 employees because the county doesn't pay starting officers off very well. Its a sad fact, that they take pay cuts for this job because it is a tough one!
I just applied for our citizens police academy myself, and awaiting to see if Ive been accepted or not. Law enforcement has always interested me, and I have gotten a few remarks from family about it.

They do issue him one and he has another of his own already. Great idea if he wasn't going to be issued one.

ROTFLMAO That's so funny, I'll have to do a yellow page web search of donut shops in his area and see if I can buy a gift certificate as a joke gift, thanks for the idea. LOL

Buy him one of those new Dragon Armor vests.. they are a lot but they will stop a hand granade and every bullet fired at them. He will be issued a sidearm but a back up is nice but thats more his choice of what he trusts.
Great idea on the vest danoon and wags, I know they are required to wear them, it's manditory. I don't know if he'll have to buy one or if they issue them. Will have to ask him next time he calls. As to the uniform shop, he has already requested that, a gift certificate for the shop. I'd like to do a little more than that. Or that in addition to.
Sorry your parents weren't happy with your choice. To be honest, as a mom
I'm not either only cause I am very worried about him. He is becoming an officer in one of the countries highest crime and homicide rated major cities and it scares the beegeebers out of me. But I will never let him know I am unhappy. Never have never will. If it's what he wants I'm behind him 1000000000 % but believe me, this momma is already praying a hedge of thorns of protection around him. I've already asked God to post a couple of bodyguard angels around him  I'm not happy for fear of his safety but thrilled he is happy with himself and his new career. And the dept he's working for sure seems to give their police officcers in training some wonderful training.

Thank you, I'll tell him.

And it is a shame what our Police Officers and Fire Fighters are paid.
And let us all know if you get on at the citizens police academy
so we can root you on ok? Good Luck with that. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. :)

Congratulations to your son. I know it is a dangerous job, but you must be so very proud of your son. I have no ideas on gifts, but if it were me, I think I'd go for the body armour...and maybe a nice weekend for him and his wife. Sounds like they deserve it.....maybe not a cruise, but surely there's a nice place close by.

Yeah, but my DIL gave up her vacation to Aruba and is really biting her tongue at the $1,000 a month less income. That's why DH and I are considering a mini cruise. Or maybe something up in Nova Scota? Maybe that Martha's Vineyards? That may be to costly. I have no idea. I know my DIL has been wanting to go to Niagra Falls.

if he already got a commision from a department. you could talk to his wife to make sure she is not getting him one. if not a wallet badge with his last name
on it and a wallet that would fit it. it will be total of about 100.00 but He would probably like it. it takes a couple month's to get so plan ahead. the one that goes on his shirt is not flat enough and can get damaged in his wallet. Mike

Caelma,
why not look up the donut shops in the area and make him a cutsie little map of all of the donut shops within a ten mile radius. you could put in some police jargon descriptions of the buildings, etc.. being a cop is a very serious endeavor...a touch of humor will probably be well appreciated by all.
