hay question

I have an opportunity to buy some Milo hay with the heads on it. I am wondering how it will work for goats/sheep? I have been told it has 12-14% protein with a tdn of 69%. I have a good friend that has cows and he says he doesn't like using it for cows because the stalks are fairly large.

What do ya'll think about using it for my goats/sheep? Keep in mind, this is all I can find in the area that isn't over 100$ a round bale. :( I am putting back any square coastal bales I can find, but have been having to feed hay for the last month already.

In my neck of the woods we've been feeding hay since shortly before winter.

We recently visited family in east Texas (Phalba/Corsicana area) & looked at some milo bales that were $85 a round...... No way would my goats eat it.... the stalks were huge & 90% would have been wasted.

So, if it's anything like what I found, I'd pass. Cheap hay really isn't cheap if they won't eat it.

Well I am wondering if I need to pass on it. It is only 55 a bale. Might need to get one or two just for insurance.

Sad that is considered cheap hay now huh? :( Some of last year's low quality rounds are going for $90 here & they haven't even been barn stored. A friend of ours bought a coastal round for $125 & when her horses got mid way through it, they wouldn't touch it....She went out to see why they were avoiding the bale......There was an entire white tail buck baled into the round that was only partially decomposed

There is a boarding stable/riding lesson facility who is picking up REALLY NICE hay from the east coast by the semi trailer load & bringing it to the DFW area.....two pick up locations, one north of the metroplex, one south. They have an ad either in Dallas CL or East Texas CL with the boarding stables website link with pics & hay info. You can can buy small or large quantities.

Not sure the price per bale, but I sent them an email requesting more info.... If the price is comparable to the high priced garbage hay I have locally available, I may be making the 3 hr. drive to grab some.

Anywho, it may be something worth looking into.

OMG! A deer in a bale of hay? That is unreal. Well. I have found some hay for 60 a bale. The ranch I work at bought 500 bales for their cows. I will be getting 5 of those. Haven't seen them yet, I will today. Where abouts are you lonestarchick? If what I found is decent maybe you can get some of it. Are you anywhere near Clarksville? Up between Paris and Oklahoma. If your interested let me know I will see how much they have left.
