I've been feeding my goats the tops of corn stalks - and boy do they ever eat them up - leaves AND stalks AND all!!!!
The local farmer who rents from me has row after row of field corn planted. Once the corn has tasseled and the ear starts to grow - the silk has already been fertilized so the top of the stock isn't needed. I clip off the stalk right above the ear or above a leaf above the ear and I haven't noticed where it affects the ear of corn in any way (I've done it for several years and the ears of the "cut" corn are the same size as the stalks I haven't cut.)
Makes some free food for my goats. I usually cut 20 - 30 stalks per goat, and by the next day, everything is gone!
