This question came up on another list and so far no one has answered it, so I'm curious.

What do you use to deworm pregnant does? I use Quest and Strongid normally....are either of these safe for pregnant does?

I too am confused.

I thought that you pretty much had to worm everyone that shares space at the same time, otherwise they ones you dont just re-infest everyone again. ??

And if you are breeding and kidding over several months rather than everyone at the same time, then how are you gonna get the wormies gone??

I have obviously not gotten this figured out yet sorry, lots of conflicting views and it is hard to sort through and understand. I understand that just because one person is right that does not mean the other views are not just as right, but it sure is hard to make sense of. (more than one way is ok)

thanks. :)

The eggs survive in the soil, and you are always going to have them, unless you live in the cold frozen north.

By the time you deworm your goats, their worm load has seeded the pasture already.

When you deworm, not all of the worms are killed. Most dewormers target just one phase of the worms' life, so the worms who are in a different part of the cycle are uneffected.

You deworm individual goats based on need, determined by fecal testing. You don't deworm everybody based on the calendar.

Quest and Cydectin are the same drug (moxidectin) in different formulations. I use Quest during the dry period if my does need to be dewormed. This includes during pregnancy. I have never had problems due to using this drug in pregnant goats. I use Pyrantel (same drug as Strongid) during lactation if deworming is necessary. Pyrantel stays in the body for a very short time (unlike Moxidectin and Ivermectin), so it is not necessary to dump the milk more than about 48 hours.
