wry neck ivomec?

Hi, I'm not new to rabbits by far but, never had to deal with wry neck before. If that's what this new bunny has, I'm sure I should disinfect all the cages and treat all the rabbits with Ivomec, but my quesion is. Ivomec is supposed to be injected, but in dairy goats it's given orally. How should it be administered in rabbits? 1 / 10 of a cc per pound. but inject, or oral? Thanks.

Sherrie, I can't help you with the Ivomec dosage or method of administration, but thought this website might be helpful to you.

The dosage on Barbi's site was pretty hefty, I also saw an article in this months DR (that, by the way, could it be written any harder so that NO one has any prayer of understanding!) They used something different, anyone have it handy with the dosage?

I know Barbi's site says to give it Orally, my experiance giving it that way has been not so good. It will give them poop butt, and the last one I dosed orally ended up with Mucoid whatever ya call it. I am not sure that it was from the Ivomec, as she had injured her back and her system shut down, no poops for 24 hours, so its likely she had also started to go septic. I ended up loosing her, she stopped eating and it was all downhill from there.

Just thought I should mention it. I haven't had any luck curing it, the first case I had I managed to improve it, but not cure it. I didn't bother with the second case.

There is some debate on her site if HQ paralysis is really just wry neck, but I dunno. Wish there were actual studies on it!

I've actually had better success with Panacure. Not sure why since it is a totally different wormer than Ivomect. I gave it orally as a pea size to several 4-5 week olds, and 2 different adults along with electolytes and force feeding through syringe. All recovered fully and the most severe one was on death's throes, and severely twisted. Now she is one of my biggest jr. does. You would have never guessed...

My theory is.. that it wasn't a true wry-neck that I may have stumbled across.. I'm thinking it was a form of cocci that was resistant to regular dymethox treatment, and was activated by stress/dehydration.

I've only been able to identify "I think" cocci in the fecals I've run. I need to run them again here soon. I've been meaning to put something together for rabbits, but I've just not had the time! :(

Just remember that wry neck is also caused by a bacterial infection.
Ivomec doesn't work in this instance.
I have used it but its not a cure only a treatment.Susan
