Does anyone know what would or could cause the fleece to felt on the sheep? I don't have sheep but help with a friend with processing. They have been getting fleeces that are felted and they say it's straight from the sheep.

Thanks
Ann

I would guess the sheep missed a years shearing so there was extra wool to tangle. Just a guess!!

The sheep are probably scratching their itches, too much. The sheep might have external parasites or some other problem. (I won't say the "S" word.)

I assume this really is fleece wool and not bellies? The degree of felting could be effected by the environment the sheep have been living in, wet in the rain and no chance to dry out etc but I would not expect this to be really significant.

Sometimes it is also cause by the sheep breed or breeding, along with, what John said, can cause the fleece to felt on the sheep.
BWM is a breed that can get alot of felted fleece in wet enviroments.
Where do you live??
