My American Bulldog was tumbled roughly by my first Catahoula about 9 months ago and hurt his lower back area (not his hips). Afterward, he got stuck beneath the travel trailer, where I was living at the time while my house was being built, and hurt himself again and then I think that the vet who came out to check him (my horse vet who did all the vaccinations last year) may have exacerbated the problem while stretching out his legs during the examination. I had Jack's hips x-rayed and the problem is not in his hips but I can't afford the specialist right now to determine exactly where or what the problem may be. My dog vet who x-rayed him recommended the specialist and also said that the problem, which I can't remember now what he indicated, would take at least six months to improve, then Jack hurt himself again. Some days he is not feeling well while other days he is just fine and he's improved a bit on NutroMax which supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin and I would like to give him therapeutic levels of a good supplement to help him through until I can pay for a specialist to pinpoint the problem. But there are so many supplements that I don't know which to buy. Jack is also very sensitive in his stomach. Any suggestions?

I use glucosamine and chondroitin for a few of our pups with wonderful results. I believe you want at least 500 mg of each at least once a day...perhaps try it and see how it goes? Good luck. :)

The cheapest way to go would be to buy plain old glucosimine and chondrotin tablests without anything extra to add to the cost. I would start out with 2000 mg and then half it after 60 days.

Thanks. So I should just go to a pharmacy and buy the stuff straight up? I thought there would be a mixture of those two plus others. There are so many right now, it gets confusing. He weighs 96 pounds so cheap is good, unless the quality suffers. No point in gving him junk.

the Whole Dog Journal did an article this month on a product called DGP (Dog Gone Pain). It's practicly a miracle cure. I don't know what it costs, probably not cheap, but you may only need to dose him for a while until he heals.

There was a thread in the family forum not long ago about glucosamine chondroitin and which ones are good quality. The Walmart brand (Spring Valley) is not that expensive and was highly rated. For my 100 lb lab I give 2 tabs of the double strength.

Thanks everyone :) I ordered a sample of theDog GonePain but at just two pills, it isn't even one day's dose for Jack. If he likes the taste I'll buy it for him. Not cheap at $34 plus shipping for 20 days though so it better be Good! :) For now I will try the pharmacy and the human grade supplements. Thanks for the advice :)

I just use the Costco "Move Free" that has both Chondrotin and Glucosamine. I was told about it and gave it to our 12 year old arthritic dog and she acted like a puppy the next day. We now have a very old shetland sheepdog that was lost after 4th of July a few years ago (age unknown) and she looks forward to her pill dipped in peanut butter. It costs around $27 for 100 pills so seems cheap enough for me.

if you shop around, you can do a whole lot better than that price. i just picked some up at the local grocery store and 1000 tablets was around 15 dollars. my vet recommends 500 mg every day for a 75 pound dog. he also says it helps to be very consistent and it may be 2 weeks or more before you see results. he said the chondroitin doesn't matter (tho i know this is only an opinion) but it is working fine by itself. i know for myself, when i buy it with the msm it does work better.

having said that, i would never ever buy any herbs of any kind at walmart. they are of exceptionally poor quality.

I have used a food supplement called Nupro before. It is an all-around health aid. My lab did GREAT on it. So much so that his joint pain (he was diagnosed with OCD at 10 months) is gone. I don't use it as much anymore because it is NOT cheap and he is huge. I do recommend it, though if he has a specific injury. It really seems to help healing.

If you use Nupro there are two kinds ... Nupro and Nupro Joint. Nupro joint has only 500 mg per scoop which I feel personally is not enogh to help a larger dog much.

I buy Nupro by the 20# pail. I get it for around $120 w/free shipping and it lasts me about 6 months giving 1 1/2 scoops a day to 2 dogs. (3 scoops total a day)
