Take a look at the night light map of the USA and I think you will see why its so hard to define.
There is a sharp line dividing several states in the west.
Personally I think of the Midwest as the medium intensity lighting between the Dark areas in the east and west.

The midwest is what keeps the east from ever meeting the west.

Oklahoma is what protects the Midwest from Texas.

It's kind of the DTZ (De-Texanized Zone.)

The Midwest got it's name long before there was a real American west. That is why states that seem pretty east, like Michigan are called the midwest.
