Any reliable way to know when corn is best to harvest. First time ever growing it this year. Picked one that was not prime last week, and one that was just right this week, but I need to know how to tell prior to picking. Thanks.

I always pick mine when the silk has turned brown.

Thanks. That is helpful. I haven't found that information in any of the books I have on the subject. They tell you how to grow it, but not when to pick it. Thanks again.

  5. Caution, the silk will turn a purplish color before turning brown. Also the ends of the silk will dry and turn brown first and this is not the time to pick yet. When the silk turns brown right where it enters into the husk it is then ready to pick.

I agree with "rh in Ok". Dry & brown almost into the husk.

When the silks ar good and brown AND it feels firm. Silks arent a gaurantee but then if its dry weather it may not get realy firm either experience is the best teacher ;)
