It's sad isn't it. There are so many who never plan for the future; not even a month or two ahead. Most have credit card debt up the wazoo as well as inflated mortgages and auto loans. I can't imagine that - at least not at this stage of our life.

I think so many people feel 'entitled' and won't be able to imagine just HOW something like this could happen to them. *sigh*

The WORKING POOR are barely getting by. They cannot accumulate any significant amount of savings.

Well, GFB has a working wife:D back in law school a lot of his classmates imagined that, since I was a nurse, we were rich...he was even told once that "all nurses make at least $100,000 a year"- by someone who was NOT a nurse and knew nothing about nursing...that was back in the 80's-
Nope, nowhere near $100,000 and nursing layoffs have been happening in the tri county area...

Exactly!! We are the working poor, have no credit card debt, but barely could put anything away each week. Over summer when the gas prices soared, and food prices as well, it cut into what we had saved.

I mentioned this to DH last night. People who already squeeze what they can out of the very last penny, when prices go up and not the income, where do you squeeze?

i agree with the responses posted. i am certainly not suggesting anyone makes rash moves without careful contemplation, but i am thinking far too many people are going to try to hold out on their own before reaching solutions that could benefit them sooner.

if 3 families exhaust all resources and then try to come together, they will have exhausted themselves and have nothing to offer each other but solace. but if 3 families come together before they have exhausted all resources, they might very well be able to salvage something to continue on with.

although that is my suggestion, i am finding it very difficult to impress that on even my own family. this kind of thinking is almost impossible for land/home owners but if people are renters........they should be pooling resources now instead of trying to make it thru a tough winter with staggering utility bills.

Not working poor here. My mother gets social security disability, on which she supports both of us.

Inflation rises faster than SS. It's hurting. Having to cut back on milk, fruits and veggies, and fill in the gap with more grain products.

I wasn't laid off , I quit my job in April. I thought I had enough savings to last me for a long time but I was wrong. I did a market garden this summer . I would guess I can last another 6 months and then I will be broke. My job was killing me but I guess I will have to suck it up and get another job. Not much out there though.

I work in subsidized low-income housing for the elderly and I've gotten a ton of desprate phone calls from folks needing help recently. Most of them just cannot afford the cost of living with their medical expenses. Its very sad the way we treat our elderly folks. I worry about them the most. :(

I wonder/worry about this quite often now.
The number of hungry, hungry and cold, cold people is going to explode this winter!
We have brought my dad in already and his monthly check is helping to take the edge off. We just couldn't see paying almost $2,000 a month for sub-adequate care in an adult home when he could be here in our house, eating good food and being with family.
It is HARD! I won't lie, but I think/hope that more and more families will move their aging parents in with them..
Jasper is quite right! Folkss need to be thinking ahead and making sacrifices. Sure, the house is tight and we have made some major changes.. but the more the merrier... sometimes:)
I worry about crime.
I worry about violence.
I worry about hungry kids... which will really produce some crime and violence. I would do anything to feed my child.
I worry about keeping my garden safe next summer... rose bushes and stinging nettles are my plan!!

i am moving to a more rural area soon and have already decided where to place my berry bushes for the same reasons. might not be an iron clad fence but i am making as many barriers as possible.

One man I know was laid-off in mid November and has nothing saved. I don't know how long he can get unemployment, $252.00 a week, but he told me that when that is gone, he is done. He has already stopped paying his credit card and TV cable. Next will be his utilities and phone, then rent $450.00 a month. I don't know what he can do and I'm not in a position to help him. I wish I could tell him something that would help. He isn't really a friend, I just know him.

I try to keep my eyes open for jobs that others might be able to take. I pray for those that are in this situation with our family and ask all my grown kids to do the same.

I am sure this is a question that those that are in danger of losing or have lost their jobs are already losing sleep over. We need to do all that we can do to help them.

I really worry for others now, we (those of us too young to have lived thru the GD) as a nation have NEVER lived thru what is about to happen and it is very scary.. My dh told our children, two yrs ago, to get prepared. Stock up, add to savings, buy gold, ammo, get rid of their excess bills and to stay put with their jobs!

For now, we have 'ENOUGH' but who can say how long this will continue. OR how many people, we are able to feed and provide shelter, for the length of time needed? How many more people will turn to crime to get what they want/need, instead of asking?? I would never want to have to send someone away if they were truly hungry or in need of shelter but where/when do you know to say "I am sorry"??
