Hello,

So I have had goats now since last October and now my little herd is up to 5 :). I do want to make sure that I don't miss anything and was hoping you could all chime in. What should I make sure I do monthly and yearly? I know I need to check/trim hooves monthly and I know I need to give CD&T shots annually. My friend who raises goats only worms if they need it, but I did find an herbal wormer on Hoegger's website that you give monthly.

I just don't want to miss anything. I have a checklist for my chickens and pigs and now would like one for my goats.

thanks!

Need to know your location. If you are in the South, herbal dewormers are not as effective because we don't (normally) have deep killing freezes to reduce the worm load on the pasture.

Monthly (at least) use the FAMACHA method to check your goat's lower inner eyelid for bright red color. This indicates that she is not anemic. Anemia (pale lids) indicates a blood sucking worm load. Also check body condition. Also get fecal tests done if you suspect worms. Then, deworm accordingly.

I live in a selenium deficient area; so I supplement this for my goats with the injectable Bo-Se.

I also leave Baking Soda out for them ALL THE TIME.

The "loose" mineral I use is Hoeggers' Golden Blend. Have used it for years and really like it.

Fresh clean water in 5-gal buckets HUNG ON THE WALLS is good and you can get them heated too. (I like to keep 2 heated ones during the winter months. My herd is only 4 adults.) I also like to add about a cup of apple cider vinegar to this fresh water. The goats love it and it helps keep the buckets clean too.

I recently started using Replamin Plus and really like it too.

Here is what I do,

Once a month I trim hooves. And sometimes more often for younger stock.

BoSe injections are given to my herd twice per year ( every 6 months)

Selenium gels inbetween the BoSe months

Copper bolus 1-2x per year

CD/T once per year

They are wormed as needed (usually twice per year)

Loose cow minerals always free choice

This is how I do my annual/weekly maintence. Hope it helps some

Here, we copper bolus/CDT/BoSe 1 month pre kidding. Varies with your kidding season.

We also copper bolus/BoSe around a month pre-breeding.

Hoof trims as needed on the dairies - definetely not monthly though. Maybe every 3 months or so. The boers we used to do every 3 months because it required a round up. :)

Other than that, I don't really do anything to them.
