the best 'pumpkin' pie is made with ripe buttercup squash.
Hubbard squash also makes good pies.

Butternut or Golden Hubbard,a smaller version than the big blue ones. We love squash. DEE who just uses the recipe that is on the back of cans of pumpkin but use my own squash; no one can ever tell the differencee...all in the spices anyhow. Just don't use a stringy kind of squash. We put ours in the Vitamix to make is creamy.

I like butternut as well. I make squash pancakes for the kids using a sweet potato pancake recipe I found online. They BEG to eat squash. Go figure! Basically, I substitute butternut in just about any recipe calling for pumpkin or sweet potato.

    Definitely BUTTERNUT!

I make a crockpot pumpkin butter with butternuts that is to die for!

They make better pumpkin pie than pumpkins. And they are a no-fail crop in my very unpredictable climate. I have 6 plants right now, going like gangbusters, along with a small single-serving type winter squash whose name escapes me.

We like the Hubbard, easy to grow, keeps well, and we like the taste.

We prefer butter cup or butter nut . Buttercup is a little drier . We eat it baked and mashed . I use it for any recipe calling for pumpkin and like it better than pumpkin .
