In your neck of the woods, what is a side of beef going for?

Sure glad we bought a side of beef earlier this year with all the recalls happening.
I just asked the butcher I purchase my suet from about this. She charges $1.89 cut & wrapped.
here in va it is 1.89 cut and wraped just filled up the freezer last month
I think this past summer it was somewhere around $1.10/lb. on the hoof to the grower for the beef and about .65/lb. basic processing.
I believe we figured ours ran around $3.00 - $3.15/lb. total after having some jerky made.
Thanks! We were told $1.99 from one butcher and $2.19 from another, wrapped and ready to freeze. Just wanted to compare with what others are paying.
The grade of beef would also have a very large influnce on the price. The price of fat cattle at the auctions varies by up to 15 cents a pound live. That would be as much as 30 cents a pound on the hanging beef. Ask the seller what kind of animal the half came from.
We just had our jersey steers put in the freezer, whole steers $330 each. VERY tender and VERY delicious! Not at all what I expected actually. I would do it all over again!
I just bought a hindquarter of organic, naturally raised beef, cut and wrapped, for $2.29 a pound Cdn.
About $1.50 per pound hanging weight, not including kill bill (which runs about $0.30 a pound hanging weight, if I remember correctly).

I just brought home a side of beef (335 pounds) for 2.95 and a whole hog (220 pounds) for 1.59.
Terri, Cattle butcher out a little over one half of their live weight. Therefor a half of beef would be in the neighbor hood of one fourth the live weight. Beef type cattle are most often slaughtered when in the 1100 to 1200 pound range. Holstiens will finish closer to 1400 or 1500 pounds.
It is quite common to purchase a quarter of beef.
The hind quarter has more "steak quality" meat in it thus commanding a higher price than a front quarter which would be more hamburger type meat.
Slight bit of a thread drift, but I dont' know anyone anymore that raises beef - can I just call a butcher and ask if anyone brought in beef to sell? How else would I find a quarter/side of beef to buy?
Craigslist now allows livestock ads. The one local to me has tons of beef ads.
Look in your yellow pages under meat lockers, or ask any hunters you might know. Here, meat lockers are fairly common in the smaller towns. I use Yoder Meats, in Yoder, KS. They buy local beef from the Amish to butcher. When I used a local locker, I asked for them to buy 4H beef. A lot of 4Hers sell their animals at the fair as a way of making money (also they don't want to bring them back home after mixing with a lot of other animals - great way to spread disease among the whole county - or state).
