I suspect this is one of those things which may not help you, but won't hurt you either (unless, of course, you over do it.) Note those the information at the end some believe the studies may have been flawed.

On the minerals aspect:

- Recently I heard a significant portion of the world's population (don't recall percentage) is anemic due to deficiency of iron. (Which is included in some fortified cereals and breads.)

This cite says percentage is 30: http://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world hunger facts 2002.htm

- At one time the area around the Great Lakes was known as 'The Goiter Belt' due to a deficiency of iodine in the water/soil - which is why we have iodinized salt.

http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/ozsvath/images/goiter_belt.htm

- In one of Louis Bromfield's Malabar Farm series books he notes the rejection rate for recuits/draftees from areas which were calcium deficient was significantly higher than other areas.

On vitamins there is growing concern about a Vitamin D deficiency in U.S. children who do not get adequate exposure to sunlight.

I agree with ladycat. Most of the vitamin supplements on the market today are made with very poor (and sometimes dangerous) ingredients. If folks would do their research and find out where the ingredients come from, most wouldn't take them (if they had a lick of sense, that is).

Everybody is different.

Do I take vitamins? No, and I do not feel any different when I do.

Do I take turmeric and cumin? Yes, because I feel MUCH better when I do!

Every body is different. I have an auto immune disease and most do not. I feel better on my spices, good, and if you feel better on your vitamins, good!

If the studies say otherwise, well so much for those studies! Have you ever noticed that the drug testing companies ask for "healthy male volenteers?" Well, perhaps those of us who are not healthy, or not male, or are not between the ages of 18 and 45 have bodies that react a bit differently? Which might be why they do not want to use us to test their theories!

Perhaps their results would have been different if they had drawn from different groups of people? We cannot ALL be a healthy male between the ages of 18 and 45!

My eye doctor could see my eyes were improving. Asked if I was taking vitamins and I said yes, He was not interested in what but said I was doing the best possible thing for my eyes and what ever I was taking to contue it. I did my own reseach what to take and how much is safe.

Well said, Tracy. We need to remember that whether or not we feel better on any herbals or vitamins depends on your diet, amount of exercise, stress level and other health issues. What one person's body needs are not the same as next guys.

That is also why so many people are so quick to just toss in the towel on alternative methods. Unlike traditional medicine/drugs, it often takes a while for alternative methods to work (or not work). It takes patience and trial and error because our body needs are so different. There is no universal "dosage".
