My husband was badly injured in Iraq, we live in a rural area, nearest VA hospital is 3 hours away. Problem is, doctors there aren't specialized enough to give him (my husband) the help he needs. The VA refuses to help us get to the specialists we need. (Mostly orthapedic type stuff)
    Any advice???

I'm sorry to hear that your husband has been badly injured in Iraq. My family appreciates his service. My son spent a year in Iraq.

Do you have a VA guy working at your local county courthouse?? I'm not sure what his proper title is. Call the courthouse and ask. If you have one, go and talk to him. We have one in our county and they have a VA van that coordinates free rides to the VA hospital.

My husband uses the VA medical services, however he has no need for the van rides. We always drive ourselves. Keep in mind that most veterans are in the same situation as you and have a long drive to the VA hospitals. My husbands regular VA doctor is one hour away...the nearest VA hospital for tests of any kind is 2 1/2 hours away...and another bigger hospital for even more tests is 3 1/2 hours away. My husband uses all three facilities, depending on what sort of tests he needs.

If he visits any of the two hospitals for his service connected disability then he gets his gas money reimbursed...for any other services he has to pay for the gas himself.

If we have a VA person at the courthouse, I am unaware of it. But I will
check into it.We always drive ourselves to his appoinments, but we're looking at having to travel several states away to see a specialist. I hate to whine, but its so frustrating!
