I am the one with the edema udder in my hiefer-- I had been milking her for 2 days and she finally calved. This is our 3rd bull calf. but her udder is much better. Guess we did the right hting by milking her-I have 4 more to calf hope for a couple heifers.
Thanks for all your help-Liz

In the past we have tried it both ways. If you milk cow pre calving by more than a day, the Colostrum will not be full strength for calf as Agman eludes to. The other thing is that it is not natural for heifer to be milking until after she calves, so they can sometimes fight you and cause a commotion, whereas if you milk them after they calve ( and lick the calf clean) they will be much more cooperative to milk.
The udder Edema will go away in time, and applying a Peppermint-Tea Tree Oil Product will make that time shorter.
You can do it either way, but we prefer to hold off on milking untill post-calving.
