Does anybody grow this?
Saffron, Crocus sativus L
If you know someone who lives in Jamaica or any of the islands down there, you can get saffron dirt cheap. I never knew it grew down there but they've got it for next to nothing! I had contemplated growing it when we lived in CA until I made that connection with a Jamaican friend. One 6 oz bag goes a very long way -- keep it refrigerated.
I used to grow it at my last place. It doesn't take much AT ALL! A couple of stamens would be all I would use in a rice dish.
I can't even imagine how long it would take to use 6oz
fall flowering crocus. You can grow them in NY.
It took years to use up 6 oz even when I was a caterer. I used it when I made Challah. At Christmas I made dozens and dozens of loaves double braided and shaped as wreaths. I'm out right now however have just made a new Island connection so I'll replace it this spring, although maybe not the big bag again.
So who sells the bulbs?
I found a couple of companies that sell the bulbs but were sold out. This company sells them but only ships in September.
Folks I just ordered some bulbs from the website above, and I talked to the lady. She says she still has some left. I ordered a dozen bulbs from her and she is sending them right out. She may still have some yet if anyone wants to check.
Most garden centers carry them. Llangeveld bulbs sell them to retailers as well as other bulb companies
I bought mine on Ebay
