I'm not sure where you get the "industrial giants" from. If you talk to the folks farming in the corn belt, it isn't any faceless company buying the land, it's doctors, lawyers, teachers, any kind of professional or anyone with money, mostly from the city, buying it up as an investment/tax shelter instead of putting their money into the stock market. It happens when grandpa dies and the grandkids from the city go together to buy the farm or inherit it with no desire to ever farm it, and then rent it out to the highest bidder. It happens when someone comes out with the money to buy a whole farm, keep a horse in the corner and rent the rest out. It isn't new, just heating up now with the hype over ethanol and people's jitters over the markets.
