Today I came home and found an entire 2 day old litter dead. The mom has raised babies before. She didn't seem to have mastitis or any udder problems, but I couldn't detect any milk in their tummies. I've never had such a problem.

Wow, sorry about that. Were they smashed, or just dead? Was it cold out? Maybe she didn't nurse them for some odd reason.

They were kind of spread out in the nest box and the hair "blanket" as my granddaughter likes to call it pushed aside. It was cool, but there's another litter in the next cage that is warm as toast. I'm thinking she didn't nurse them for some weird reason, which I don't understand as she's raised litters before. I put her back in with the buck and she was responsive, so we'll see in 30 days or so if it was just a fluke or if she has issues. It was a really large litter (12). Maybe she was just overwhelmed.

Yeah, that's odd. It does sound like she wasn't nursing them. Maybe she didn't know what to do with them! :)
