Hey all, I have a few sheep that the mothers are registered , but the lambs are not. These were all given to me recently. To tell who goes with who, I wanted to put tags in their ears , but I am wondering if the lambs have to be registered first , and put the number of that registration in the ear ? Or is it purely for your own records and ability to tell them apart ?

    Thank you !

Most ear-tagged sheep are because of the scrapie program, not because they are registered.

The government's Web site with links to the regulations and how to comply with them.
    Call 1-866-USDA-TAG with questions.

The lambs don't have to be registered for tags. You can get id tags for recording purposes, too. Check Premier's site.

Check with the Breed society who registered the sheep. They will tell you which ear to tattoo or tag and which ear to put in a flock number which is used for scrapie ID and other purposes.
