Anyone have connections to look up a Va. vehicle tag?
A man dumped 2 dogs in my driveway today. Got the tag number but dont have a free way to get his info. Sheriff said he can't won't. Dont have the funds to pay for the online sites.

I guess because this was an out-of-state tag (VA) your sheriff didn't feel like doing anything. I'll withhold comment about him.....

As to your question, VA is one of those states where just about anybody can find that info, if you have a good reason and there's a long list that you might legally qualify for........even the Girl Scouts, lol.

BUT, since it is a misdemeanor to dump an animal according to VA statutes (disregard jurisdiction for the moment) I would suggest calling over to the next VA county's Sheriff dept and give them the info. They have the right and duty to take your complaint and act on it.
Another option is take them to your local shelter and ask them to check them for a "chip". A lot of places chip dogs and cats automatically now and there will be some kind of info on it if they have one.
VA law states that it is your duty to try and find the owner of a companion animal if found, even a $50 fine if you don't.

    ;););)

I know that you're in WV, but I'm sure you can find a conscientious helper if you call around.

There's really nothing your Sheriff can do since he didn't see the crime.

If he tracked the guy down, and there's nothing to directly connect him to the animals, it will be your word against his and there will be no charges anyway.

If you had pictures of him putting out the dogs it might be different, but not much.

Here's what the law says in your state, @Forcast

Just what would you do if you knew who the guy was ?
Take them back so he can dump them somewhere else ?
Sue him for hunting. Your property ?
Go dump a load of garbage at his place ?
In this state you go to the DMV and pay a small fee.
Or just. Shoot the breeze with a friendly cop.

He "investigated the complaint" when he talked to her.
There's really nothing else he can do.

A Vet could report it also, but the end result will be the same since there's no way to prove "beyond a reasonable doubt" who dumped the dogs, and it's not worth the expense to go after someone in another state over this.

No doubt that would qualify as an "investigation" in some people's eyes............

Seems there is a witness to the illegal act. Thus the tag number. Law enforcement could at least write the person a ticket or three. Yep I know its not likely. It’s just a matter of priorities and not likely high on their list.

The fact there was a "witness" is really meaningless.

All the guy has to do is deny it and it's one person's word against another's.
Unless the LEO sees the crime, or there is video or pictures, there's no case.

Well there are a whole lotta cases in this country fixin' to be thrown outta court, since cops can't be witnesses to every crime, there aren't enough of them to go around.
You would't happen to have proof of that court precedent would you? You know, the law or ruling that says a cop or video/pictures are the only valid evidence in court?
Maybe it's in the same precedent that says if a sheriff answers a phone call, that qualifies as an investigation?
I'm sure others would like to read that link too. Take your time though, I'm in no rush, just curious.

Seems to me a man here in Michigan that commited a crime and is going to spend a couple hundred years in jail and NO COP was a wittness, NO PICTURES and NO VIDO's either. Just witnesses is all, the complaintants.

If for no other reason than to let the person whos plate number was taken jump thru hoops for dumping dogs he should be, questioned, ticketed and/or just take up his time for what he did.

No wonder so many repete crimes are commited since no cop sees them they can't do squat. Ya right I got it your word againest his.

Roll up the pant legs the B/S is gettin deep.

Glad to know you have an animal control officer or office. They will be out--end of that mess. In Indiana, a local veterinarian had to get a Post Office box in town. About once a week, there would be a dog tied to his mailbox.

    Context matters.
This thread is about a random dog dump.
It's ridiculous to attempt to compare that to more serious crimes.

No, you're really not "just curious".
You know what I said, when taken in context, is simply the truth.

If you think I'm wrong, call your local LEO's and tell them you want to report someone running a stop sign.

Give them a license number and see if they will write a ticket based on your word alone.

No link is needed for that.

    Yes, I do.

No, you actually are hoping I'm wrong and can't show that it's true.

You love to dig up pages and pages of obscure laws so I find it hard to believe you don't know what I said about this case is simply reality.

Why not just admit what I said is correct instead of continuing to dig this hole?
You'll be less upset when I show the proof.

I’d think a pretty simple investigation of the crime would follow the plate number back to the owner have a couple quick conversations with these neighborsWould show he had been in possession of those dogs previously.
