My son works for International/Navistar in Fort Wayne IN. He called last night and told use they were told International would be laying off about 300 people on Tuesday. I text messaged him today and he said that if they were laid off they would be stopped at the door and escorted to pick up personal items. He said he thinks he's OK since he was at his desk and hadn't been stopped. My wife talked to the DIL and she said the department managers had talked to the people making the cuts and my son's department is short 5 people so they did't think they were going to lay any off. Good thing he still has his job, their going to have a baby in March and have just bought a house.

Glad the news is good for you folks. That must be a hard one, going to work wondering if it's going to be you or not.

I'm glad your son made it through this round of layoffs. It is terrible not knowing what each day will bring during these times.

The scary stories of how the layoffs occur, and the escorts to gather personal possessions are something right out of a science fiction novel. I've joked that if I'm next for a layoff they need to give me at least a day to move out of my space. I've been here nearly 25 years and have the stuff to prove it. Seriously, I did go through all my personal drawers and threw a lot of stuff away recently and tried to consolidate all I could just so if need be I can grab and box in kind of a hurry.

I have nothing at work that is personal, I took everything home when the dot com crash happened back in 2001-2002 and never brought anything back. I can be out of the office in five minutes flat. Learned the hard way watching others who got the pink slip and so am prepared as best I know how.

Glad to hear that your son is still employed, so many aren't anymore and it is just plain sad.
