I Had a outlet valve put in my pond Its about 6 feet in the dirt with a 10 foot long 4" pipe sticking up so that I can put a tool over the end of the valve to turn it to open or close it.
When they were done putting it in no one thought to put a cover over it.
Today when i went to close the valve there was a certain "AIR" about the pipe and a soft guushy feeling when I stuck the wrench in the pipe.
Now how do I get the remains out so I can fill the pond?

Bend it in a spiral shape and attach it to a stout pole. That way you can "screw" it into the remains (IF youre lucky) It cant be too large if it fit in a 4 inch pipe

Trap a possum, put a leash on it, throw it in the pipe for a few days.

I'm with Mary. See if you can hook it out with a good piece of wire. If you have a hose that will reach that far you might try flooding it, too, to dislodge it enough for your handle to reach the valve, but I'd try the wire first.

    Wet/dry vac?

Ew. My pipe is shallow enough to put my arm down, and I didn't want to walk back to the house for the wrench, stuck my hand down there to turn the valve on - and yeah, something had crawled in there and died. And I stuck my hand right into it. I don't know how it got cleaned out, I made my teenage son do it. I was busy washing my hand for the next 2 hours.

Maybe try twisting a piece of barbwire in the hole until it grabs whatever is plugging it.

I was at a friends house one evening and she pointed to the pipe sticking out of here drainfield. It was some kind of black blob. When I walked out for a closer look I found a fisher had stuck his head and body in the pipe and couldn't get out and died. He was frozen stiff.

So?? How did it turn out, FM? Inquiring minds want to know!

Although I'll settle for the 'G' rated version - no need for details relating to stench, entrails or vomit.

    You're green when you're online.

Or else maybe you're just envious of FM's dead critter thing... :D

Ok Im moving on to plan X as in dig the thing up! I took a piece of wood 3/4 inch thick and nailed 8 1 inch fish hooks to it and put it on the end of a pipe. I then ran it down the pipe and gave it a 1/4 turn and pulled it up.
    I got the hide.
    Did it agin
I got a lot of the carcuss
Did it agin I got a lot more of it,
Still cant get the handel to work there must be a few of them down there but the rest are to thin to hook too thick to run the handle thru.
Ill be digging it up tomrrow Il let ya know what happens.
By the way something took the possum carcuss over night!

Ok I got it dug up!!!
It seems that the fishhook possum getter really did work the problem was that the down pipe had come off the valve in the backfill proccess and hadnt allowed the handle extention to get on the handle and turn the valve. I got it closed up and now am up to about 4 feet of water!!!
Now if I can get another 4 feet or so it will be up to the beach and I can enjoy a bit of private summer fun!! :p
