    Hey all, real quick.....
When I went to milk my brown swiss this morning, her behavior was very odd.
She didnt want to get into the milk stand, barely stood for the milking, and now out in the pasture, she keeps shaking her head. No fever, and no mastitis. No weird breath, like with ketosis.
She is about 4 months into her lactation.
What would you advise? What could it be?
    Thanks all,
    Mary F.

One more thing, after going out and observing her for about 10 minutes.
She shakes her head, takes a few steps back..then will start to run, stop, and shake her head again. She didnt come when I threw alfalfa, not normal for her. Also, she didnt eat all of the grain at milking, which she usually does. She seems kind of crazed?

Thanks Jeff. I was going to...but after observing the last hour, she has stopped the weird antics, and is piecefully chewing her cud.
Just threw alfalfa again, she is up and eating it.
So weird! I dont know what to think of
    it.

Sounds like maybe she had something in one of her ears?

My guess is that she is in heat.

Well since it sounds like whatever was bothering her stopped bothering her, then it could have been maybe a piece of hay in her ear. Our swiss will shake her head when she gets ----y, but with the way it was described, sounded like a problem. If she is eating, chewing her cud, acting normal, then it probably was something as simple as paula said.
