My 11 year old Shih Tzu has developed a skin condition I need help with. Her skin is oily, crusty and she was itching all the time. I bought a medicated shampoo and some hydrocortisone spray which is making her feel better but I'm not sure if it will eliminate the problem.

Does anyone have any idea what this is? Can I give her Benadryl? Anything else I can do to help her?

What do you feed her? Poor nutrition often shows up in the skin. You may need to change her food, remember she's a little old lady.

Does she have a foul odor too? It could be Demodex mange. Its not common in older dogs but can affect tehm if their immune system is weak

I had a chow that itched all the time. The vet never did figure out what was wrong but we did control it by bathing her in "Keri" oil. You can purchase it at Wal mart, CVS etc. It is with the lotions. Hope it helps your dog too.
