I am thinking about making up a hog gambrel for butchering day, has any one done this? thinking of welding together some rebar into the proper shape and bending as needed, any thoughts?

I welded two pieces of angle iron together to form a square tube. Then used hooks from a old safety harness. It works great.

When I was a kid my dad built me one from a busted hickory maul handle. It hung tons of meat to butcher. This year it busted on a pig. I got 30 years out of it, so that wasn't bad.

I made ours out of cold-rolled steel (3/8 inch) and two welds....its worked for over 20 years and I'll be using it in a couple of weeks.

This one was cut from 3/8 steel plate. The ring on top keeps it from slipping too far when weight is removed from one side, and the more vertical tips keep the remaining ham from slipping off. The rebar type could be modified to work this way also.
Sory about the picture quality. I ws trying to outrun a heavy rainstorm so I didnt have time to take more than one LOL
