I have some plumbing problems in this old house.

I currently have several problems, and this is one question I have that may help me determine the problem.

When draining the bath tub, we are getting a strong sewer smell coming up thru the drain.

    What causes this?

We are on city sewer, if that matters.

    Thanks in advance!

Maybe your vent pipe going thru the roof is plugged with a wasp nest or gunk. Run a snake down it to clear it.

the water trap (below)for the tub could be empty or low due to a leak or break... theat would let gas back up through the pipe too...

Make sure you have a can of wasp/hornet killer handy...just in case.

I had a similar problem last winter, except that I am on my own septic system. I took a walk outdoors and looked up to the roof to find snow covering the top of the vent pipe! It was the first time that has happened since I've lived here - 14 years. The snow melted in a short time, and the odor went away.

Wow! Thank you for all of your comments.

You were right. Vent pipe problem.

My plumber friend came over today, and showed me where a previous owner had cut a vent pipe off and capped the top.

Will be working to replace the vent to an outside location.

Again, thank you for all the help today!!! This site is the best!!!
