Hoping someone can help me out with sealing my new heirloom sauerkraut cutter...it cost a bundle in my opinion...is made of solid beech. I think the raw wood should have some oil of some type...any help would be nice.

I bought it from Heinsohn's Country Store, Texas...very well made...Lehman's just didn't have what we wanted.

It'll take some work but I'd go with bees wax.

There is a food-safe finish made for wooden bowl and cutting boards that you could use.

I use mineral oil on my kraut cutter and my cutting boards.

I've never heard of a kraut cutter. I've always just used a knife. I think I might like one of these. Would it work for shredding a head of iceberg lettuce too?

I made a cutting board in shop class. It was sealed with Crisco shortening. Mom used it for years.

My MIL still uses the one my DH made her when he was 13...thats 35 years ago!

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out mineral oil and see what that's about. I suppose one could buy that at the farm stores?

Yep, you could shred just about any veggie on these sharp blades. It really cuts some nice long shreds...

FYI---Mineral oil IS "baby oil"!Nothing special to go out and spend the bucks on!

Baby oil has scent added to it and is not food grade. Mineral oil is sold in the pharmacy dept in any store near laxatives. It is used as an intestinal lubricant
