One of my flowers in particular is loaded with honeybees. It is also loaded with aphids. What can I use to kill the aphids without harming the bees? (I have honeybees, so I'm propagating this flower in several places.)

Mix together 1 teaspoon Condy's crystals (potassium permanganate), 1 tablespoon Epsom salts and 1 bucket water, and use to spray plants regularly. Once a week, tip a few cups of the mixture around the base of the plant. Discontinue once the aphids have gone.

Encourage ladybirds in the garden. They eat aphids at the rate of up to 400 a week each. Plants which attract aphids include: fennel, dill, coriander, caraway, angelica, tansy, yarrow, cosmos, coreopsis, scented geraniums, dandelions, nasturtiums. (This can be a good thing - keeps them away from more valuable plants like roses, and gets them to congregate together to make them easier to get rid of!)
    OR
Anise, basil, lavender, chamomile, coriander, fennel, garlic, garlic chives, marigolds, mustards, nasturtiums, petunia, pyrethrum, rosemary, sage, tansy or wormwood will deter aphids.
    OR
Place sheets of shiny aluminium foil around the base of a plant – it will reflect the sunlight and deter aphids by ‘blinding’ them.
    OR
Trap aphids in a bowl of detergent containing a few drops of yellow food colouring in it. Aphids are attracted to yellow, and they will land in the dish and drown.

    CANOLA OIL SPRAY:
Mix 1 part canola oil into 50 parts water (approximately 1 tablespoon oil to 1 litre water). Add a few drops of diswashing detergent and shake well. Spray tops and bottoms of leaves and stems generously to get rid of aphids, mealy bugs, spider mites, soft scale or earwigs.

    CITRUS SPRAY FOR APHIDS:
Boil 2 cups water in a saucepan. Remove from heat and add the peel of 1 lemon or grapefruit. Cover, leave overnight. Mix half water and half citrus liquid, and use as a spray for aphids and other soft-bodied pests. The spray must come into contact with the pests to be effective.

Spray on some pure Eucalyptus oil.

Spray on a 'tea' made from Elder leaves' or a Garlic spray.

    GARLIC SPRAY:
Soak 1/2 cup crushed garlic cloves in 1/2 cup vegetable oil for one week. Add a little liquid soap and dilute the mixture - 1 part mixture to 10 parts water. Garlic spay will kill and repel aphids, woolly aphids, bean fly, stink bugs, crickets, grasshoppers, red spider mite, sawfly larvae, scale, snails, slugs, thrips and caterpillars, mosquitoes and ticks, the adult moths of leaf-miners and mealy bugs. It is an effective fungicide when used 3-4 times a week against potato blight and damping off
    OR
Crush 100g garlic, 2 chillies and 2 onions and cover with water for 24 hours. Strain and add enough water to make up 2 litres.

Also treat your plant for ants, which will 'herd' aphids for 'milking' a sweet substance they exude. Aphids may well be the symptom only of an ant problem.

A good spray of 100% WATER! Use a spray nozzel on the hose and a good spray. No insecticide, no residue, non toxic to any other insect...it just knocks them off and they drown.
