Has anyone else been laughing at the recession advice given on the news or on news' websites? Today CNN ran how to be a recessionista - it was advice about keeping up your high fashion wardrobe during a recession. It was things like buy your jeans at the Gap instead of paying $200 dollars for denim. I also clicked a link on AOL about saving money. It offered advice like buying cheap Vodka and pouring it into a more expensive bottle to full your guests at parties. Who is this advice geared toward? If things get worse the people looking for this kind of advice are going to freak. How about how to cook from scratch or make do with what you have. I don't know maybe I'm too pratical. Anyone else seen any crazy advice?

I am with you. I am simply amazed at what I have heard in the past few weeks:

"In these times of uncertainty, you should consider not paying $15 each day to eat lunch out. You should consider having lunch that costs just $7 or $8."

Another show told "How a family of 4 can eat for less than $25 a meal when you cook at home."

Another show said "You should never spend $200 or more on something without consulting your spouse."

Huh????

The media has to continously come up with gimmicks and nonsense, to keep viewers viewing.

A great recent one, is taking the idiot hosts of the "Today Show", wasting jet fuel, flying them and their camera crews, to beautiful remote areas of the world, only to report on "how man is damaging these beautiful places" - brilliant!!!!

If people actually tuned them out and started doing something constructive, they'd be screwed and we would all be much better off. ;)

It is crazy advice but maybe they want to lead people gentle into recession. Dah I am afraid some people are in for a rude awakening. We are cutting out trash pickup and water delivery. The town does not pick up the trash and our water has an awful lot of iron. But those two will save us about $40 a month and we get to go to the dump every week. It may not be so bad as you never know what you might find at the dump.

Here are a few of my favorites from various sources:

Instead of dinner, movie and a latte, how about just a dinner and a latte? Your entertain urge will be satisfied and your taste buds too!

If your phone plan doesn't offer free rings tones, limit yourself to just a two a month instead of the impulse change every week.

Add a week between hair salon appointments and if your pooch goes too, add a week in between his too.

Eating at home all the time can get boring and down right depressing. Plan and save for a least one night on the town a week.

When planning the family vacation, remember to look domestically.:eek:

Oh my!!

Eating at home all the time with my DH is a joy to cherish.

We went out to dinner last week for a treat, and after spending (blowing) $60 on a so so meal, we both agreed we'd rather eat a home cooked meal in front of the fire.:)

I forgot to mention, these are not my ideas, but ideas I have been reading. :)

Hey, today on Regis and Kelly, he started griping that GM makes great cars. Why, he drove a Caddy for the entire month of August and it was a great car! Why aren't we buying American? Gellman drives an Escalade, for goodness sake, and Kelly piped in that she loooovves her Yukon! Duh, guys, I'm driving a 10 year old van that I bought used off a street corner 4 or 5 years ago. I can't afford to even look at a Caddy! There's a real disconnect between the "haves" and the rest of us "have-nots" and it's not just on Wall Street. There needs to be a real tax-payer revolt in this country. But sorry, I can't afford to head it up. I'm too busy trying to figure out how to put food on the table.

How about, "Since you can't sell your house right now because the market is "soft", take out a home improvement LOAN to increase the value of your house!

I do have to agree that the caddy is a pretty good rig, at least mine is. I have been driving it for 23 years now and its still going strong. It was already 5 years old and had 85k on it when I got hold of it in 1985. I have had it painted once, and it needs it again to look top shape but it still cruises out nice on the highway and still gets 20 and 21 mpg. Other than tires, brakes, a water pump a few years back and batteries every few years I havent had to spend much on repairs at all. Caddy built it right! :)

Buy a ringtone (or 2) a week? I've had the same ringtone for over a year now. I still enjoy it and I don't plan on changing it any time soon. I still have moments where I will hear the ringtone and think "You know, I really do love that song." Then I'll realize it's my phone ringing.

It is driving me crazy that almost every news report that I've seen lately preaches the same thing: shop - shop - shop.
