Recipes for feed......

851 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jena
Help! I have geese and ducks on the way. I've raised them in the past, but this batch I would like to raise on strictly organic feed. Can't find a local source for premixed, but one of the feed stores can get a whole plethora of ingredients so I can mix my own. Except...... I can't find a "recipe." Does anyone know of any that they would be willing to share, or can recommend a source? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

What is your definition of 'organic feed'?

I've not tried their recipe, but it looks like what you may be after. I like to mix soy grits and cracked corn along with what ever kitchen scraps I have. I usually soak the grits and corn overnite in a big pot and then boil the scraps and mix together. There seems to be less waste that way and I usually get eggs right thru the winter. I put about one part soy to 3 or 4 parts corn. More corn with less kitchen scraps. My chickens will eat potato peels etc if they are cooked, but turn them down if raw. I also toss any cat 'presents' in the pen and watch the fun! My boys are good mousers and catch more than they can eat so they like to share with Mommy :haha:

Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks by Holderead (sp.)

Check the library they may have a copy. He has formulas in the book, as well as other feed suggestions.

Ken - by organic I mean feed that is composed of organically grown, non chemicalized, non medicated ingredients. We are fortunate enough to have a local feed store that carries a line of certified organic chicken feed, but nothing for ducks, geese or turkeys. But they do carry organic soy beans, corn, wheat, etc. So I was looking to see if I could find a recipe to whip up a batch of feed with these ingredients.

Cyng and Shep - THANK YOU for the book recommendations! I have both of them requested from my library, should have done that a loooooong time ago.
i have raised ducks and geese using chick starter-20%-and letting them graze.

it might be easier to just adapt one of the chicken feeds.
