I read in Larousse Gastronomique (a classic French cooking dictionary) that a pig's diet consisting of potatoes and chestnuts makes a tastier pork. Is this healthy???
I can't say it is but, I can't say it's entirely unhealthy. I was looking at my Stockmans handbook this morning in regard to care & feeding of swine. The potatoes would fulfill the energy requirement and chesnuts are a nut which would fulfill the protein requirement.
What goes in will effect the taste. I don't worry about it to much in the beginning. A healthy diet and healthy animal are most of the concern. Usually about 4 weeks before the butcher date I feed my pigs differently not unhealthy but just what I feel will give me a better quality meat. Have fun.
