What can I reasonably expect to pay for one or two highland steers? Just trying to figure out if the local market is reasonable or not.

Lots will depend on where you are, and who you are dealing with. And, of course, the age and size of the steers.

The primary value of a steer is it's slaughter value, regardless of breed. In Indiana calves born this year that would be weighing as much as 600 lb. are selling from $.95 to $1.30 per lb. The lighter calves selling the higest. Yearlings that are weighing above 700 are going from $.85 to $1.00.
The choice beef breeds sell conciderably higher than the holstiens and standard grade beef crosses.
