Powdered Butter?

Has anyone here tried powdered butter? Is some better than others? I am not thinking for everyday use, but for long term storage in my preps. Any suggestions? I was looking at some from Honeyvillegrain.

I've got some in the pantry and have used it for baking. It's not really good for table use since the grainy-ness doesn't go away with reconstituting. It does work fine in baking, though, same with powdered shortening. I've invested more in canned butter from BePrepared.com (Emergency Essentials) and canned some of my own (cooked off all the water and made ghee.
Like you, I bought for preps so when Honeyville had that last good discount, I bought the butter, eggs and milk and a case of the various TVP cans. BUT, they come in huge cans and I haven't opened them either.

I sure wish these places would sell small "try me" packages so we could taste them all for ourselves.
Depending on what you want to use it for (spreading vs. cooking), you might want to look into canned butter. Do a search for 'red feather canned butter' for sources. It's pricey but I've read good reports about it.
Thanks folks!!!
I've got powdered butter, milk and eggs in my long term storage. I haven't tried them either. But I figure if it got to where I could not get fresh, then this would be great to have.

I do plan on getting some chickens when I get a coop built, but I don't think I'll be getting a cow for milk and butter ;)

I agree, that would be really nice.

If anyone wants an open can of TVP to try, PM me. You pay the postage and I'll mail it to you. It was pretty nasty tasting and since we have rabbits and chickens and wildlife for meat I don't see a time when we'd be interested in eating it. :hand:
TVP can be nasty, but it seems to work for us when I use it to extend meat, not replace it. Rehydrate it in beef stock (if plain flavored) that add it to hamburger when making taco's works well. It would help you get rid of it. I haven't bought any (use to use about 1# a month) as I don't want to over do soy in my young daughter. I've heard rumors and haven't had time to bother looking into them.

Powdered butter/shortening and such...I use it all the time when cooking and making up mixes. The powdered sour cream works well, too. The sour cream you CAN NOT reconstitute and use like fresh (the can says so everything I read said so, but I tried anyways out of curiosity). But a spoonful or two work great when making strognoff and similar foods. Make a great sour cream coffee cake, too. Since I hate keeping fresh on hand as I only need a tablespoon or two a month, it's a god-send. I have powder peanut butter, eggs and tomato's too.

Do you have a particular vendor you like for all that?
Yes and no. I use Emergency Essential and Honeyville. I'm in a buy group with EE so when we put an order in it is because we have enough of the group special to get free shipping and there is usually one or two of them on sale, so I double up with the sale price and free shipping. Some things EE doesn't carry that Honeyville does....or....I need something NOW and compare the 2 with S&H and go with the cheaper.

I got some powder buttermilk from the local bulk food store and love it (works better than the vinegar in the milk trick)! EE has it on sale this month, so if an order goes through (and I pray one does) I'll double check and see if they are cheaper then the bulk food store.....anyone within 30 miles (or so - I'll meet you half way) of Stark Co, Ohio - contact me if you want to join our group, no minimums to buy, ever!

The TVP has been spoken for!
When I first tried the SMALL can of Ham flavored TVP from Walton Feed, I found it tasted like burned rubber tires. However, crumbled dry on top of a salad, they are nice as extra chunky bacon bits!

Using powdered eggs and powdered milk, it was a nasty, awful tasting mess.

Not bad when scrambled with fresh eggs, cheese and some dried onion.

Palatable when using half fresh eggs and half powdered eggs, but the above was much better.

I found it best with fresh chopped onion and fresh eggs.

So my rule of thumb is two items fresh + one item storage prep for best flavor.

The unflavored TVP I find is the best and most versatile. Put it in lasagna, meat sauce, meatloaf, hamburgers, etc.

I suppose the taco flavored TVP might be easier to eat as well. Have not yet opened up the chicken flav TVP strips.

All others, I figure would go well in soup.

I think Walton Feed offers a big can filled with little sample packets.
I can second the recommendation for Red Feather brand canned butter. It is really tasty, tastes like Irish butter to me. If you want something that will store well, you can also try ghee. I trust it will be safe, and I don't have that same faith in home-canned butter. It won't last as long on the shelf as the Red Feather will, but a few jars are easy enough to use and replace. In a short term emergency, those few jars will keep you from having to use your longer term stores.

BillHoo, the ham TVP is better in other things, I have found. I bought mine to use in soups and when cooking beans, lentils, and split peas. They give a better taste and texture there rather than trying to use them in eggs. The taco flavor makes very acceptable tacos, especially when used with traditional taco fixings. It also works in burritos, with refried beans and some cheese. And it makes very acceptable nachos.

I think the powdered butter tastes very salty. Canned butter is better but tastes like margarine.
You can get canned butter from www.mredepot.com. It is very good, not as salty as regular butter, but tastes good.
