    Its a 78 pick up with points! But it slopping the oil everywhere, only 312K miles so far, time for a rebuild. The engine is an earlier 302 and its been about 30 years since I tore down an engine, I remember a code system from before that identified the year and decade of manufacturing, does any one else still remember and can refresh me? It was a letter per decade and digit for year of decade located on the intake if I remember right.

    after the letter is a number to tell the year within the decade.

    C8=1968
    D8=1978
    E8=1988
    etc.

    That info may or may not help you. From the sound of it (points on a 78) the truck has been changed so the intake may not be from the same year as the block. The 302 came out in the cars in 1968 and in trucks in 1975 or 1976 (can't remember off the top of my head the exact year it was).

    Good luck
