I planted asparagus last year, and this year it is coming up purple. I'm sure I didn't plant a purple variety and it wasn't this color when it came up last year. Does this mean the soil is lacking some nutrient or is it too heavy in something? I treated each hill to a hefty scoopful of ash-rich compost earlier this spring. Could that be the trouble?

    Thanks!

a lot of my spears come up purple but turn green soon after there up mine are in rich soil and doing well they get bigger and more of them every year . if your come up purple and stay that way maybe the crowns you bought were mislabeled and it is one of the purple varieties happened to me last year with my tomatoes planted yellow tomatoes and got cherry tomatoes. may be a nutrient thing but not sure if that would make them stay purple or not
