I just dressed out a NZW doe that was a yr old Jan 5th. I tried to breed her several times, no fur pulling, no kits. Yes, I'm sure she was female. When I skinned her, she had a large amount of fat. But nothing compared to inside her abdominal cavity. (I save offal for dog food) She had a qt ziplock bag 1/2 full of fat. I've been told that if the doe is fat she will not kindle. I started tring to breed her at 6 months and she was not too fat then. She was my only NZW doe, so now I'm looking for another. Any ideas?

But........we can't see internally so we don't know how much fat
is accumulated in the reproductive areas. In my limited experience
(with NZ and Californians) the major reason for does not kindling
is overfeeding and waiting too long before breeding for the first time.
The does will mate but do not kindle or have small litters, some
    of which are stillborns.

If you purchase NZ does from producers who select for early
maturing does/bucks, breeding does at 16 to 18 weeks (provided
they have attained good weight) is quite normal.

It could also be that your doe was sterile from birth.

I hope you have better luck with your next doe.

Limited experience! Linda! :nono: Folks, Linda *only* runs a commercial rabbitry big enough to do it full-time. The lady knows what she's talking about. :)

Anyway...I'm thinking Linda's diagnosis is correct...our commercial breeds sure grow fast and convert feed to meat efficiently, but they are prone to obesity.

    Better luck next time! :)

Maybe that wasn't fat you pulled out of her abdominal cavity. Could it have been cancerous tissue?
