We will be moving into the farmhouse (5 acres) next Jan. I have been talking to a woman who is just getting into the rabbit meat business. Sounds like the type of thing I have been looking for. Can you suggest any books, sites, etc for me to read to find out how (and if I really want to) get started with this.
What I am looking for is a way to make some money at home. Don't need to get rich, just need to replace the income from a lousy, fast food, part time job.
We already have chickens over there.

    Thank you
    Sherrie

    Dear SherrieT,
The first thing that you want to do is find out where the Ditributer is that picks up the rabbits you have, and the price he pays. Also make sure you get GOOD breeding stock.

Try the Professional Rabbit Meat Association website at http://www.prma.org/
Lots of good information and a buyer/market report

Contact the processor. They *might* (some do) give referrals to some
of the producers who consistantly provide rabbits meeting their
    requirements.

I am *assuming* that you are NOT looking for show quality
rabbits. Finding an exhibitor with rabbits able to produce in a
commercial environment might be a little more difficult.

Good luck with your venture. :)

There is a rabbit processor in Maryland. Go to the PRMA web site to view the list of processors at: http://www.prma.org/ . You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer in order to view it. There is a link for a free download of the Reader on the PRMA web site.
