Have a 1998 Ford F-150. Need to replace starter..now that old starter is out and new one ready to install...hubby is not sure where the positive and neg. wires go onto new starter. Is the positive on top..and neg on bottom on starter. Both bolt holes are the same size..Any help ???

Starters ground through contact with the bell housing. The positive wire should go to the lead that does not have a contact going into the electric motor case. There should also be a small wire that should be self explanatory where it goes.

So in this picture the positive would go to the stud on the top

thank you very much for you help. He thinks this is how he did have it. If it doesn't work..perhaps it is a bad starter from the auto store..

Being someone who works at a parts store it is possible but it isn't likely. It normally ends up being another problem. For instance a bad battery cable, or a problem with the ignition switch.

Yep if it is a tilt wheel and one uses it for a pull bar it can break the little pot metal activator rod if this is the case you can turn the key in the run position then jump out the starter solenoid :sing: Also if Ford even think the battery connections are corroded they won't make contact . :hammer:
