I'd like to call a feed store and have them mix some grains for us so we can buy in bulk, rather than having to pay so much per bag for the feed for our baby chicks. They're off the medicated feed now. These are the Cornish Cross Rocks that will be butchered for the freezer.

What mix of grains (recipe) should we tell them to use?

The mills around here have a 500# minimum for custom mixing.

Thanks KMA. There are 3 families going in on this so it won't be a problem ordering in quantity - we've done it for regular feed before. I'm tired of running to the feed store every 3-4 days and paying $10 a bag!

If I did a custom mix, I would use Joel Salatin's recipe:
    52% corn
    29% roasted soybeans
    11% crimped oats
    1% feed grade limestone
    3% Fertrell Nutribalancer
    3.5% Fish Meal (Sea-Lac)
    0.5% Kelp Meal
    0.1% Fastrac Probiotic

I know, it adds up to 100.1%...I didn't write the recipe!

I don't really know either, but I've seen his name mentioned around here enough to know he has some hero status for many. :) Tread carefully.... ;)

    Hey Shepard,
Can you let us know what the cost breakdown ends up being? I'm curious how much you save by buying a bulk mix. Thanks.
