Need advice on purchasing a ram.

The first two pictures are of the ram lamb in question, he is a percentage registrable dorper, the next two are of his mother and his twin brother, the last three are of his sire and his registration who is also selling for $1,200 and is a triplet, his grandfather sired the best selling lamb at Duncan dorper going for $3,000.

He was born in May or June, and they are asking $250 for him. What do you think? I’m really interested in him. He seems like he has nice genetics for a nice price.

Depends entirely on what your near term goals are. Small time breeder looking to have good marketable lambs/ewe replacements or long term Dorper breeder selling registered offspring as breeders. $1200 is way too much for a ram for meat lambs. On a small scale the lambs won't look much different, especially if your new to the sheep world.

We ended up passing on him, it was just too far for one ram lamb. We are planning to look early next year to get one closer to us next time.

Yea you drive 200 miles one way, that is $200 added to the price. I use IRS rates to estimate. I spent $200ea for purebred unregistered CVM sheep, but that is one of the rarest sheep varieties.

I got 5 angora goats mid-age with 2 nannies for $450 total.

I rent a ram for 3 months each year for $150 to $175.
