Thanks in advance for your good thoughts, vibes, prayers, and whatnot. My mom needs 'em again, and this group is so good at offering.

Some might remember I posted a couple months ago how my mom has this awful rash from head to toe. It's really been taking a lot out of her and neither her doctor nor the dermatologist seems to really be able to pin down a cause or cure. She's on prednisone, a diuretic and potassium supplement, and gradually she is seeming to get better but she definitely isn't there yet.

Before this started my mom, age 74, was in good health, she didn't take any meds, drove, got around fine, though she was pretty sedentary and couldn't walk very far. Now she can't walk without a walker and even that is getting difficult. Also her cheeks are puffy, feet swollen.

I've been taking her to the dermatologist once a week. We missed a week when I was sick. This time he noticed (as did I) that my mom is jaundiced. Her face is noticeably yellow, and even her eyes are tinged. Yikes. So he told my mom to go to her regular doctor and get tests.

Well, here's one reason it's frustrating to help my mom...did I mention she is a procrastinator? Mom said "Oh, I can't go, he's on vacation till next week." He's in a group practice. Mom could see any of them. She just kind of rolled her eyes and said she'd call and "see what she could do," which means she'll call in about a week and say that oops, she called too late and the office was closed...(sigh) So I called this morning and got her in this afternoon. Mom was shocked. TODAY? Yep. You're yellow. You need a doctor! I see clearly that from now on I need to make those appointments, not her.

So we need to go to a liver specialist tomorrow, and to the lab to get her blood work. Now here's where the prayers/vibes/etc. come in -- send 'em for my mom, hoping whatever she has is minor and easily treated.

On the plus side, I went to the grocery for her as I do every week after her doctor appointment, and she is buying and eating lots of healthy *real food* for a change, which is an improvement over the processed junk she usually eats. I guess she's finally figured out there's a connection between food and the way she feels. 'Bout time. She's feeling better and has actually started cleaning her condo again. She wouldn't let me do it and wouldn't hire anyone, so yuck, it's gross. I have found a small solution...she will allow my daughter to clean as a way to earn money, a favor for my daughter, so that works. DD cleaned up for her quite a bit yesterday afternoon.

As worried as I am about my mom, I'm equally worried about what the heck I'll do if I get a job. I won't be able to take her to weekly doctor appointments, run all of her errands, do her weekly shopping, etc. It'll be all I can do to keep up with my own shopping and errands. But if I don't get a job we'll be in financial trouble. Flippin' double edged sword. :grump:

She's got them. :)

About the errands and shopping; can you condense them with yours so you can get it all done at the same time? Set up automatic drafting for her bills if you can... just trying to figure out ways to save a little time and hassle.

Is there perhaps a senior services division around you that could shuttle her to and from appointments? Or someone from her church (if she goes)? If so, might have to call her doctor beforehand and ask him to brief you on what needs to happen too, since it sounds like she's one to "forget" important things she needs to do/medicine to take. Might even send a taperecorder in her purse, lol!

I pray it's something that can easily be treated and she soon is relieved of all the symptoms.

Let us know what the liver specialist says.

I hope everything works out ok -
sounds a little like what my DH's cousin is going thru right now - jaundiced, puffy, tired, just dragging . He had a thyroid imbalance which caused an enlarged heart. he was carrying around 35-30 pounds of water in his legs alone.
Make sure they check her thyroid!!
