How many of you use muzzleloader to hunt?
do you use a percussion cap or flintlock?
    What load works for you?
What is your favorite hunting load?

I use both but mostly the caplock. I like .50 cal and maxi-balls over about 80 grains of powder black or the pyrodex equivelant by volume... I use the same for roundball too

I use a 54 cal. Thompson Center flintlock for muzzleloading season and a 45 cal Thompson Center percussion during regular rifle season. I love my black powder. Also use cap and ball revolvers and a 1861 Springfield (reproductions) for Civil War re-enacting.

.45 long rifle, percusion, patch and ball. Going to build a flintlock.

  8. I was using a inline, but I got to feeling like I wasn't really doing any primitive hunting anymore. So I went back to the ole smoke pole, 50 cal. using patch and round ball. It does the job for me since the majority of the deer I harvest are within 20 yards of me when I shoot. Also, went back to the ole recurve too.

I hve 2 inlines and one caplock but I use the inlines a lot more since they dont misfire as often. One good load I use is 80 Gr Hodgdon Triple 7 and a Hornady 300 gr 44 cal bullet with sabot. That load shoots well in every gun Ive ver tried it in with a 1 in 28 twist

I have a Lyman Hawken-style caplock in .54cal. I like a 110gr load with a 500gr Buffalo Maxie bullet for deer & hogs. This rifle is 43yrs old & I've taken a lot of deer & hogs with it. I also shoot black powder revolvers for fun. I have a replica Colt 1851 Navy .36cal & a Ruger copy of a Remington New Army .44cal. I love shooting black powder.

DANG!!! I thought 425gr. Great Plains Bullet was overkill.54Cal. I found Patch and Ball to be plenty.

Each to their own Rock! I like that 500gr Maxi. It engages the lands & grooves of my rifle better than round balls & makes for better accuracy for me. JMO.
